Dr. Muffazal Lakdawala
He is currently the President of IFSO (International Federation of Surgeons for Obesity and Metabolic Surgery) - Asia Pacific chapter.
In his career of 15 years, Dr Lakdawala has conducted over 30000 surgeries,both in India, and abroad.Dr Lakdawala has operated in every country of Asia and the Middle East where he has performed live surgical procedures , he has also operated in Europe in Belgium and Italy .
A trained laparoscopic surgeon, he specializes in Bariatric Surgery and GI oncology . He is known internationally for his pioneering work in the field of scarless bariatric surgery wherein he has operated on the largest number of patients in the world and is a keen researcher in the field of diabetes surgery.
A graduate of the prestigious Grant Medical College in Mumbai, he earned his Masters in Surgery from BYL Nair Hospital. He went to train further in bariatric surgery at Cleveland Clinic, Ohio with Dr Raul Rosenthal as his guide and at theUniversity of Ghent Hospital in Belgium with Dr Piet Patton ; he was also trained in advanced colorectal cancer surgery in Seoul, South Korea with Prof Seon Han Kim .
Dr. Lakdawala was awarded the Rotary Excellence Award in February 2018. In March 2017, Dr Lakdawala won the Lokmat Maharashtrian Of The Year in the Medical Category. The prestigious award recognizes and honours individuals who have contributed positively and brought glory to the state and India in their field of speciality . In September 2017, Dr Lakdawala was also recognized by Giants International an acclaimed service organisation, for his stellar contributions to the field of medicine. He had previously won the Humanitarian of the year. Dr Lakdawala has also operated on some well known people in India who have gone on record to thank him for his contribution to their positive health from the Vice President of India Mr Venkaaih Naidu to the Minister for Road Transport Mr Nitin Gadkari , Minister for Education Mr Vinod Tavade , Bollywood superstar Salman Khan’s mother , Hrithik Roshan’s sister and dance choreographer Ganesh Acharya. Dr. Lakdawala was also recently appointed as the official bariatric doctor to Mr. Venkaiah Naidu
Dr. Lakdawala was in the news for his humanitarian approach in the treatment of Emaan Ahmad, once the world’s heaviest woman, who reached out to him with a heartfelt appeal to help save her life. Under his care, Eman’s weight reduced from 500 to 176 kgs in over 3 months and her health had improved before she moved to Abu Dhabi. Dr. Lakdawala is now looking after Mr. Kevin Chenais, a 27-year old Frenchman who weighed 304kgs at the time of his arrival in Mumbai. Kevin has been under Dr. Lakdawala’s care for almost a year and has seen weight loss of over 100kgs, bringing him down to 196kgs.
Dr Lakdawala is also very committed to mentoring and training younger surgeons and is a Professor at the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences. He proctors and mentors 2 international fellows every year for a fellowship in Bariatric Surgery . He has the highest number of publications in the field of bariatric surgery in India to his credit and is regularly invited to be on prestigious committees worldwide. Dr. Lakdawala is on the board of the Asian Endosurgery Task Force (AETF).
Dr Lakdawala has also authored a best seller in his debut book, The Eat-Right Prescription, released in 2016 . Its Gujarati edition, titled Uttam Aahar Uttam
Jivan, was released earlier this year to much acclaim.He is a TEDx Speaker, as well and his talk on the dangers of sugar in 2016 was very well-received.
